Have a wonderful weekend,

Can you believe that it is already December? We are only ten school days away from winter break! This year is flying by! Here are some of things we have been up to over the last two weeks in first grade:
- In reading, we have learned tons of strategies for what to do when you get to a tricky word. I will be placing helping hands in each child's book check pouch. We have also begun to work on ways to improve our fluency in order to make our reading sound smooth. In the next week or so, your child will be receiving a Sight Word Folder in his/her book check pouch with cards of words to practice reading each night before reading the book check book. Be on the lookout for this soon!
- In writing, we wrapped up our study of punctuation and have begun to write how-to books. Ask your child about how to make hot chocolate! :)
- In grammar, we learned about verbs and adjectives. Your children are truly becoming experts. A fun game we played was tossing a soft object around the circle and each child named one adjective to describe the object.
- In math, we worked on greater than, less than, and equal to. We will revisit this again later in the year with larger numbers when we get into our Place Value unit. We also worked on ways to find missing numbers, or parts, in an equation. I sent home a note with ideas for how you can practice this at home. In school, we used math mountains and the number line as a strategy. I will post a video about math mountains on the practice page for math. We also played the games Tens Go Fish and Counters in a Cup.
- We also met with our 4th grade buddies to write letters of gratitude and had a visit from Mrs. Scaglia to learn some more about different kinds of feelings.
Here are some important upcoming dates to keep in mind:
- Monday, December 10th- Our class will visit the Holiday Shop. Please send money in an envelope with your child's name on the front. It is also helpful to include a list of who your child should be shopping for.
- Thursday, December 20th- Our class party will be held
- Friday, December 21st- Early Release Day and PAJAMA Day
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs. Penna
