Dear First Grade Families,
I hope that you are all enjoying this snow day and staying warm! I just wanted to write a quick post with some updates. Here is what we were up to last week and some of the things we will working on this week in first grade:
In reading, we have been practicing retelling fiction stories. We learned that we can retell a story across our five fingers by telling the characters, setting, beginning (what's the problem), middle (how do the characters try to solve the problem), and the end (how is the problem finally solved). We also have been practicing sequencing stories using the illustrations to help us. I have finished all mid-year assessments, book check levels have been updated and our guided reading groups have resumed. Yippee!!
In math, we wrapped up our unit on Place Value and took the post-test Thursday and Friday last week. All tests have been scored, so be on the lookout with the test and a letter for your review in your child's folder soon. This week, we are working on a pre-test for our next unit, Numerical Operations. We will be diving into this unit next week.
In writing workshop, first graders have been busy writing persuasive letters to ask for something or to make a change/fix a problem at home, in school, or in our communities. I will be sending home a letter with two blank envelopes this week requesting two stamps so that your child can mail two of his/her final letters. Your support with this is greatly appreciated!
In science, we learned about the moon last week. We observed a moon phases calendar and noticed patterns in the moon. This week we will be learning about stars.
Some other important announcements:
Thank you for all that you do, and have a restful snow day!
