Dear Parents and Families,
This week was a busy one in first grade! Here are some of the things we worked on this week:
In reading, we read books with Tacky the penguin. We learned about how to describe a character using character traits by thinking about how they look, how they act, what they have, and by thinking about what the other character say about him/her. As a fun STEM challenge this morning, students designed and built a raft for a penguin and then tested their structures. Be sure to check out the Pictures page for some fun shots of this!
In writing, we have begun to draft persuasive letters. We will continue drafting next week.
In math, we applied what we know about patterns on the 100 chart to find 10 more and 10 less to solve math story problems.
In science, we learned about day and night. We learned about how the Earth rotates on its axis, causing night and day. We also experimented with flashlights to figure out where the sun needs to be in order for the groundhog to see his shadow tomorrow (IE, behind him, in front of him, on the left side, etc.)
In your child's folder today, many letters were sent home with lots of information about upcoming events. Please keep these dates in mind:
Have a wonderful Superbowl Weekend, and stay warm!

- Reading Rally has kicked off! Read every night and record the book title and minutes on your child's log. Return the logs each Monday in February.
- Valentine's Exchange will be on Feb 14th. A letter came home with a list of our student's names. Please help your child to make sure that every student gets a card. If you do not want your child to participate, please send me an email.
- Global School Play Day will be next Wednesday, February 6th. Each student can bring in a game, toy, activity from home. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES.
Have a wonderful Superbowl Weekend, and stay warm!
