Dear First Grade Families,
It officially feels like fall! This week in first grade, we read the book Creepy Carrots. We spent time predicting and checking our predictions, drawing and writing about our favorite part, and retelling the story. We posted to our SeeSaw journals to retell the story. If you have not yet connected to SeeSaw, now is a great time to go check out your child's digital journal! If you need help downloading the app or logging on, please reach out!
In writing workshop, we selected a small moment story to begin to get ready to publish. All week we have been revising our stories to make them even better. We learned how to write twin sentences, use our five senses to add details, and to add speech bubbles, thought bubbles, and dialogue. Next week we will begin to edit for punctuation and capitalization.
In math, we practiced strategies for addition, such as doubles, doubles plus one, and friendly numbers that make ten. We also started addition story problems that have more than one way to be solved.
In social studies, we are creating books and posters to teach any new students who move to our school all about ourselves, our classmates, and our school rules.
Some things to ask your child about from this week:
Upcoming Important Dates:
Next week, please be on the lookout for book check books to be coming home. I am hoping to begin book check next week. Your child will be bringing home a book at his/her independent reading level and should read the book to you each night. THANK YOU to all of our parent volunteers who will help make this wonderful program possible!!!!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Penna
